It nearly always starts with the balance.
Disconnect the opener, lift the door to waist height and let go. A door that is set up properly stays where you put it. A door that drops or climbs is fighting its springs, and every other part of the assembly is paying for it. The opener works harder, the rollers wear faster, the cables stretch.
That is why a tune-up is usually cheaper than the repair it prevents, and why Will checks the door before he will sell anybody an opener.
